Summer weddings are stunning. The sunshine, the flowers, the long evenings, it’s the dream. But let’s be honest: no one wants to be melting in their dress, sweating through a suit or dealing with makeup sliding off before the first toast. When you’re part of the wedding party, you’re in the spotlight all day and that can mean serious discomfort if the weather’s working against you.

Wedding experts, The Foxy Hen shares their top tips to stay fresh, comfortable and fully present on the big day.
Start with Smart Outfit Choices
This is where it all begins. What you wear and how it fits can make or break your day in warm weather.
Brides: Consider lightweight fabrics like chiffon, silk, or organza. These materials allow air to flow and won’t cling uncomfortably in the heat. If you’ve fallen in love with a heavier gown, think about a second dress for later in the day, something floaty and fun for the reception that lets you breathe and dance.
Bridesmaids: Speak up early if you’re asked to wear dark colours or full-length gowns in the middle of summer. Lighter colours reflect heat, and sleeveless or halter styles can make things much easier. Don’t be afraid to ask for breathable fabrics. You’ll be in that dress for hours.
Grooms: You don’t need to sweat it out in a three-piece suit. Summer weddings are the perfect excuse to go lighter – both in colour and weight. Linen and cotton suits are stylish and breathable. Drop the tie if the vibe is relaxed and consider skipping the waistcoat altogether.
Stay Ahead with Beauty Prep
Hair and makeup routines need to adjust for the season. Brides and bridesmaids, opt for matte primers, setting sprays, and long-wear products. Waterproof mascara is a must. Have a small kit on hand with blotting paper, a powder compact, and a mini fan or cooling mist. You’ll be glad you did.
Updos or half-up styles can keep hair off your neck and help you stay cooler. If you’re wearing your hair down, keep a few pins or clips nearby in case it gets sticky during the day.

Hydration is Your Secret Weapon
This sounds obvious, but it’s the easiest thing to forget. Start hydrating the day before the wedding and keep sipping water throughout the day. That goes for everyone including the bride, groom and bridal party.
Ask someone to be in charge of making sure you’re drinking enough, especially during busy moments like photos or getting ready. Mix in a coconut water or electrolyte drink if you’re feeling drained. You’ll be amazed how much better you feel.
Pack a Wedding Day Survival Kit
No matter what the forecast says, pack for the heat. Your kit might include:
- Deodorant
- Cooling wipes
- Face mist
- Suncream
- Spare makeup
- Plasters (for blisters)
- Mini fan
- Hair ties or clips
- Comfy shoes for later
A little prep here can save you from feeling flustered when you should be soaking up the joy

Take Breaks and Be Kind to Yourself
It’s easy to forget to stop and breathe when you’re in the wedding whirlwind. If you’re feeling overheated or lightheaded, step away for a few minutes, grab a cool drink, and let your body reset. Groomsmen and bridesmaids, look out for each other. If someone’s flagging, step in. A quiet moment in the shade or a change into flats can turn the whole day around.
Have Fun Without Burning Out
If you’re doing photos outside, schedule them in the late afternoon. That golden hour glow is flattering, and the temperature will have eased off. For the ceremony, ask if shade can be arranged. A canopy, a tree, or parasols can make a huge difference.
Later on, once the dancing starts, kick off your shoes, grab a chilled drink, and enjoy it. You made it through the heat and still looked incredible doing it.
Summer weddings are about joy, warmth, and celebrating love. With a few clever tricks, you can stay cool and feel amazing from the first photo to the final dance.
