So it’s your first Valentine’s Day as a married couple and you may be wondering how to mark the occasion. Well don’t worry, we’ve totally got you covered in today’s post. Whether you’re super into Valentine’s Day or think it’s just another day we’ve got something for everyone. Here are 7 Valentine’s Day ideas for newlyweds.

We want to start off by saying that just because you’re married now it doesn’t mean to say you have to change the way you celebrate things as a couple. If you’ve never really been into Valentine’s Day don’t think you have to have some big, over the top celebration just because you’re a newly married couple. Whatever you did before getting married is totally valid and there shouldn’t be any pressure to change anything up now you’re married. That’s not what marriage is about.
We’ll let you into a secret, we’re totally not into wild and extravagant Valentine’s celebrations over here at The Thrifty Bride either. Low key and personal is what we love. So if that sounds like your cup of tea then keep reading!
Watch your wedding video
You spent so much time planning your wedding, selecting the perfect photographer and videographer so don’t become one of those couples that totally forgets about their wedding photos and video. Use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to relive all of those beautiful moments from your wedding day. Look through your photos, watch your wedding video. And if you haven’t got around to making a wedding album or photobook yet maybe you could make a start on selecting your favourite photos. To make it even more special you could recreate some of the food or drinks from your wedding day too.
This ones a great cheap option for Valentine’s Day but it’s guaranteed to leave you feeling some of the wedding day glow all over again.
Ditch technology
We all know how easy it is to get distracted by technology. Mindlessly scrolling through social media on our phones or tablets or having that never ending debate of what to watch on Netflix. One of the easiest things you can do this Valentine’s Day, to really connect with your partner, is ditch those distractions. Just enjoy each other’s company.
There’s several options with this one too. You could go totally tech free all day and choose to go on a nice walk, a pub lunch or visit a museum or you can spend the evening with your phones tucked away. Put on your favourite music or podcast, get out a board game or a pack of cards and just spend time truly catching up with each other. This is a really great one if you’re just not that into Valentine’s Day as it’s something that could become a weekly habit too. It’s not too mushy or romantic but it shows that you’re 100% invested in each other without distractions.
Write a love note
Writing a love note is a super simple and cheap way to add some romantic fun to Valentine’s Day. There’s several ways you could go about this, from a simple note left for your partner to find or you could turn it into a bit of a treasure hunt where you leave notes and clues around the house that leads your partner to a gift or special surprise.
Love notes are good for couples that aren’t good at voicing their emotions too as they allow you to write everything down that you want to say to your partner in your own time without the pressure of speaking to someone there and then.
Book a spa day (or DIY it)
This could easily link in with ditching technology as no one wants to be looking at their phone when they’re relaxing at the spa! A couples spa day is the ultimate treat if you’re looking for something a little more romantic though. What could be better then blocking out the world, getting quality time together and coming away feeling relaxed and refreshed?!
We know spa days aren’t cheap though especially as many offer valentines packages which bumps the price up even more which is why we think a DIY spa day can be just as good! You could even plan it out together to make it the perfect experience for you both. Light plenty of candles and wax melts around the house, find fresh relaxing scents that replicate those soothing spa smells, dim the lights and get out all your favourite products (or maybe even treat yourselves to a couple of new ones for the occasion). Think face masks and massages, invest in some nice oils or head to Lush and pick up one of their massage bars and take turns soothing each other’s daily stresses away. You can crack open a bottle of fizz, have some strawberries and chocolates on hand and feel relaxed but all on a smaller budget.

Go on your first date (again!)
Your first date is where it all began, the start of your relationship that has now turned into a beautiful marriage. So why not relive the moment where it all started and go on your first date again! Relationships definitely change over time and that’s no bad thing. But remembering those early days is often a good way to get the fun and flirtiness back. So whatever your first date was have a go at recreating it and reminisce on those days where you were just getting to know each other. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on your relationship milestones and how much you’ve grown as a couple.
Try something new
Chances are if you’re celebrating this Valentine’s Day as a newly married couple you’ve probably been together quite a while. It’s easy to fall into a safe and comfortable routine when you’re in a long-term relationship and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. It’s great that you’ve found someone who you can be yourself around 100% of the time. It’s also important that you both do keep the spark alive though. Make a pledge to try something new every now and then. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to introduce this!
This could be anything from a new restaurant to you both, taking a bath together, visiting a new hotel for a night away or even something new in the bedroom. Much like the rest of your relationship, long-term relationships can fall into a bit a routine when it comes to sex so have an open and honest chat together about things you might like to try out between the sheets.
Have a favourites day
Make the day all about what the other person likes but make sure you’re both on board, if it’s one sided the bond won’t be there. Make each other your favourites meals, pick out your favourite outfit for each other, take turns doing each others favourite activities. It’s a chance to step out of your comfort zone a little while still enjoying each others company.
For example the outfit your partner picks out for you as their favourite might be one that you wouldn’t pick out but it’s a chance to see things from their perspective, compliment each other and say why you like them in that particular outfit. Same rules apply for trying out each others activities. You might be an avid reader while they absolutely love gaming. So spend some time reading a few chapters from your favourite novel together then let them teach you how to play their favourite game.
So there we go, 7 Valentine’s Day ideas for newlyweds. Being married doesn’t mean all the fun has left your relationship but spending this Valentine’s Day as newlyweds also doesn’t mean you should put pressure on yourselves to celebrate in a way you don’t want to. It’s about reconnecting, spending quality time together and bringing that spark back.
You know each other inside out which can definitely be used to your advantage on an occasion like Valentine’s Day but when you’ve been together a long time it’s also important to remember to step out of your comfort zone and try new things together.
